Scented Candle Safety Tips
Your Grandma was right when she told you fire is a good servant but a bad master. It's useful, but must be treated with respect to keep you, your home and your family safe. To help you do this, here a 10 tips to help you use your scented candles safely.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended – always extinguish it before leaving the room.
- Keep candles away from flammable items such as curtains, paper and furniture.
- Place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface to prevent tipping or heat damage.
- Trim the wick to about 5 mm before lighting to reduce smoke and encourage an even burn.
- Keep candles out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental knocks or burns.
- Do not burn a candle for more than four hours at a time to prevent overheating and excessive soot.
- Keep the melted wax free from matches, wick trimmings and other debris, which could catch fire.
- Leave at least 10 cm between burning candles so they do not create excessive heat or affect each other's flames.
- Avoid burning candles in draughty areas, as moving air can cause uneven burning, smoking and dripping.
- Stop using the candle when about 1 cm of wax remains to reduce the risk of the container overheating or cracking.
